for its “superior” quality of coal in the late 1800s, Superior was a quiet ranching
and farming community through much of the 1900s.
With the development of a master-planned subdivision through the 1990s and construction of several
prominent retailers and office projects, the community is now home to approximately
12,000 residents. Ranked 13th in CNNMoney.com’s list of
America’s Best Small Towns, Superior has 817 acres of parks and green space
and 28 miles of trails.

The Town has worked in conjunction with the Boulder County Sheriff's Department, Rocky Mountain Fire Protection District, Colorado State Patrol and City and County of Broomfield to develop a traffic plan that provides a safe situation for the entire race course. The course will make a loop from the start/finish on Coalton around Rock Creek Circle and include a portion of the Summit neighborhood before coming back out on Rock Creek Circle, then back to the start/finish on Coalton. Racers will travel in a counterclockwise circle through the course.
Both lanes of westbound Coalton will be closed from Rock Creek Circle/Parkway (adjacent to Land Rover Flatirons) to the west side of Rock Creek Circle from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Both eastbound lanes of this same stretch of Coalton will be closed from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. A portion of the north lane of Rock Creek Circle around the Summit neighborhood will be used for the race course. Traffic traveling north to Rock Creek Circle from West Yarrow Circle, Castle Peak Avenue, West Torrey's Peak Drive will be able to proceed eastbound on Rock Creek Circle towards the Rock Creek Parkway (adjacent to Land Rover Flatirons).
On Sunday, May 29, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. the featured Superior Morgul Road Race will follow the classic Morgul-Bismarck loop made famous by the Red Zinger Bicycle Classic and subsequent Coors International Bicycle Classic that was held here from the late 1970s through the early 1990s.
The westbound lanes of Coalton will be closed from Rock Creek Parkway through to McCaslin Boulevard as a neutral start area for the racers. The eastbound lanes of Coalton will be closed from Indiana Street to McCaslin. Racers will shift over to the eastbound lanes of Coalton and then cut through the roundabout and head south on McCaslin to begin the race near the top of the hill at Highway 128.
All lanes of McCaslin Boulevard will be closed during the race day from the north side of the intersection with Rock Creek Parkway up to Highway 128. McCaslin Boulevard south of Rock Creek Parkway will be open in both directions, but one lane of southbound McCaslin will be closed for racers between Coal Creek Drive and Rock Creek Parkway.
The race course also includes Original Town and Sagamore neighborhoods, as race participants will come from Marshall Road, head south on 76th Street, turn east on Coal Creek Drive and then head south on McCaslin Boulevard. Access to those streets will be limited that day. Residents of the Sagamore neighborhood will be able to enter and exit the community via Sycamore Street, where a uniformed officer will direct traffic across 76th Street. Residents of Original Town will be able to cross Coal Creek Drive at 4thAvenue, where a uniformed officer will direct traffic. Traffic marshals will be present along the course throughout the day to help monitor and coordinate traffic flow for neighborhood residents.
Residents of the Ridge neighborhood will be directed into their community from the intersection of McCaslin Boulevard and Rock Creek Parkway by Boulder County Sheriff's Department staff and race marshals who will be present at that intersection throughout the race day. The marshals will hold traffic going into the Ridge in an area just north of the intersection, and when there is a safe distance between racers the drivers will be directed to proceed into the neighborhood. Drivers leaving the Ridge neighborhood will leave as directed by marshals when there is a safe distance between racers to head south on McCaslin to Christenson Avenue.
